The Arab Parliament has joined the Arab League in strongly condemning the Israeli storming of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) headquarters in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of occupied Jerusalem on Tuesday.
Carried out by Israel’s Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, the raid included the demolition of facilities inside the compound, the removal of the UN flag, and the raising of the Israeli flag.
In two separate statements, both sides said the raid constitutes a grave violation of international law, relevant UN resolutions, and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the UN.
They warned that the action forms part of a systematic Israeli plan to dismantle UNRWA, undermine its mandate in the occupied Palestinian territories, and erase the rights of Palestinian refugees.
The two bodies also urged the international community to move beyond condemnation and take concrete measures, including sanctions, to compel the occupying power to halt its violations and allow UNRWA to carry out its UN-mandated role.
