An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck northern Chile early Wednesday.
According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), it struck at a depth of 145 km.
The US Geological Survey has placed the epicentre about 62 km southwest of San Pedro de Atacama.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
