Plane skids off runway in Istanbul, killing three

MUHAMMED DEMIR / AFP

At least three people have died and 179 injured after a plane skidded off the runway at Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen airport.

The Pegasus Airlines plane had a rough landing on the flight from the western city of Izmir.

A total of 183 people were on board as the aircraft crashed into a field, breaking into three pieces.

Authorities said the plane could not hold on the runway due to poor weather conditions and skidded for around 50-60 metres.

The incident has affected operations at the airport.

It comes after a Pegasus Boeing 737 skidded off the runway at the same airport on January 7.
