The Gulf region is at a critical crossroads, with regional security, economic interests and emerging technologies reshaping its role in the global order.
These topics are being explored at the third edition of Hili Forum 2026, which opened in Abu Dhabi on Monday under the theme 'Gulf at Crossroads: Conflict, Consequences and Course Correction'.
The forum is organised by the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) and the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy (AGDA), with senior officials, diplomats, academics and international experts taking part.
This year’s programme is built around three themes: geopolitics, geoeconomics and geotechnology.
Dr. Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the UAE President, said the region needs to move beyond a prolonged state of uncertainty and work towards sustainable stability through diplomacy and clear international rules.
He also stressed the importance of a clear, verifiable approach to Iran’s nuclear programme.
Dr. Sultan Al Nuaimi, ECSSR's Director-General, said the forum aims to highlight the Gulf’s role in international stability and explore stronger political, legal and economic cooperation.
The AGDA's Director-General Nickolay Mladenov added that the Gulf is becoming one of the key arenas shaping the future international order, despite growing global divisions.
The opening day featured discussions on Gulf regional security, as well as fireside chats with senior regional officials, including the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The forum also included networking sessions connecting young people and members of the public with experts to discuss regional and international issues.
Hili Forum continues on Tuesday, with the focus shifting to emerging technologies, competition for influence and the role of middle powers in the evolving global order.
