Filipina teenager Alexandra Eala fought back from the brink of defeat to reach the quarter-finals of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open after a marathon win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

She recovered from 4–0 down in the deciding set to win a near three-hour match on Stadium Court, eventually sealing victory in a tense tie-break. The comeback was greeted by loud support from the crowd, which included a large Filipino contingent.

“The support here has been really special,” Eala said afterwards. “I’m learning how to enjoy these moments and have fun in big environments like this.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Russian second seed Ekaterina Alexandrova beat Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in straight sets, while Czech qualifier Sara Belem caused an upset by knocking out former finalist Jelena Ostapenko.

British number two Sonay Kartal also progressed, defeating Mexico’s Renata Zarazua, who entered the draw as a lucky loser after defending champion Belinda Bencic withdrew through illness.

In the doubles, Ellen Perez and Demi Schuurs advanced after a super tie-break win, while Irina Khromacheva and Andreja Klepač moved through in three sets. Sofia Kenin and Desirae Krawczyk reached the semi-finals via walkover.
