Fernandes hits hat-trick for Man Utd in thumping win over Ipswich

Bruno Fernandes's hat-trick helped Manchester United to a crushing 5-2 win over Ipswich Town to ignite their Premier League season on Sunday.

United, well-beaten at Hull last weekend, fell behind against another promoted club as Leif Davis gave Ipswich the lead at a stunned Old Trafford.

But Fernandes thumped home an equaliser on the counter-attack before a Jacob Greaves own goal put United ahead, and the captain struck twice more, once from the spot, in the second half.

Marcus Rashford made his first Manchester United start for more than 18 months after loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona but it was United skipper Fernandes who once again showed why he is the club's talisman.

Rocked by Davis's 29th-minute opener, the home fans sighed with relief after a slip by Ipswich's Marcelino Nunez allowed Matheus Cunha to slide in Fernandes who rifled home a shot.

United went ahead in the 56th minute when Harry Maguire's shot was inadvertently turned in by Greaves and were in full flow two minutes later as Fernandes tucked away a penalty.

Fernandes completed his hat-trick when a deflected shot fell for him in the box and Bryan Mbeumo's lob rubbed salt into Ipswich's wounds, before substitute Chuba Akpom pulled one back in stoppage time as the heavens opened at Old Trafford.
