Osaka edges past Azarenka at Roland Garros

World number one Naomi Osaka is through to the third round of the French Open after coming through a difficult tie against two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka.

The Japanese star dropped the opening set 4-6, but struck back to take the second 7-5 and the decider 6-3.

Serena Williams, seeking a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam, also progressed from the second round, defeating Kurumi Nara 7-5, 6-1, while Ashleigh Barty sealed a straight sets win over Danielle Rose Collins.

In the men's draw, Dominic Thiem overcame Alexander Bublik in four sets and Giles Simon suffered a surprise loss to Salvatore Caruso, going down 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.
