Defending champion Jasmine Paolini overcame a rain delay on match point to advance to the last 16 of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Germany's Eva Lys.

Elsewhere, in a clash of former finalists, No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek raced past Victoria Azarenka 6-0, 6-2 to reach the next round.

Fifth seed Jessica Pegula also advanced with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Liudmila Samsonova, while No. 9 seed Paula Badosa defeated Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-1.

In other matches, sixth seed Elena Rybakina eased past qualifier Moyuka Uchijima 6-3, 6-2, No. 11 seed Diana Shnaider lost to Linda Noskova 6-7, 6-4, 3-6, and Dayana Yastremska defeated Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 6-3.
