Real Madrid slump to shock CL defeat as Villa stun Bayern

A first-half penalty earned Lille a shock 1-0 home victory over holders Real Madrid in the Champions League group phase, ending the 15-times European Cup winners' 14-game unbeaten run in the competition.

Jonathan David converted from the spot three minutes into first-half stoppage time to hand Real, who had not lost in their previous 36 matches in all competitions, their first defeat since January.

The result put Ligue 1 side Lille on three points from two games in the new format of Europe's premier club competition.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran's late lob over Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to earn a 1-0 win was a pre-planned tactic, the Premier League side's manager Unai Emery said.

"In the analysis we did, we were speaking a lot about the usual position of Neuer, which is high," Emery said of Villa's pre-match conversations.

"He (Duran) had in his mind this possibility about Neuer."

The 20-year-old Colombian electrified Villa Park with his 79th minute goal, receiving a long ball then hooking it over Neuer who had come off his line as he did often in the game.

"He is young, he has huge potential," added his delighted boss. "As a player, I have to let him play, put him on the field, because his talent is there, his capacity to help us."

It was Duran's fifth goal as a substitute this season.

Elsewhere, Liverpool defeated Bologna 2-0 and Benfica thrashed Atletico Madrid 4-0 on Matchday 2 of the new-look competition.
