UCL round-of-16: PSG, Tottenham fall to Bayern Munich, AC Milan

Bayern Munich pulled off a 1-0 away win against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), while AC Milan scored a home win against Tottenham Hotspur.

PSG star Kylian Mbappe made an unexpected appearance from the bench in the club's first leg match of the Champions League round of 16 against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Despite the home loss, Mbappe made a noticeable impact on the game, having two goals disallowed for offside. After coming off an injury earlier this month, Mbappe's return to fitness is crucial to PSG's hopes in the second leg, which is set to take place on March 8 at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

After the game, Mbappe admitted he was not expecting to play this game. This was PSG’s third defeat in a row, something which has happened only twice in the last 11 years. The French champions have now lost five times in 11 games in 2023, which is more than their total defeats (four) in 2022. 

Meanwhile, AC Milan secured a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in their first-leg round of 16 match, positioning the Italian club for their first quarter-final appearance in 11 years.

Brahim Diaz's goal in the seventh minute set the tone for the game, which was characterised by Tottenham's weakened state due to injuries and suspensions. Milan had several opportunities to extend their lead, but substitutes Charles De Ketelaere and defender Malick Thiaw missed their chances.

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte further irked club fans when he said in his heart he looked forward to returning to Italy someday.
