US Open: Top seed Pliskova falls; Djokovic advances

Top seed Karolina Pliskova has crashed out of the US Open following a straight-sets defeat in the second round.

The world no.3 lost 6-1, 7-6 (2) to France’s Caroline Garcia, who will now face 28th seed, American Jennifer Brady.

Elsewhere, sixth seed Petra Kvitova overcame a shaky start to defeat Kateryna Kozlova 7-6 (3), 6-2 in her second-round match, while the 2018 champion, Naomi Osaka, cruised past Camila Giorgi 6-1, 6-2.

In the men’s draw, top seed Novak Djokovic overcame Kyle Edmund 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to set up a third-round matchup against No. 28 Jan-Lennard Struff.

Fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas also advanced to the third round following a 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-4 win over wild card Maxime Cressy.
