Virgil van Dijk will captain Liverpool with Trent Alexander-Arnold named vice-captain for the new season.

The Liverpool defender has been handed the armband following the departures of both Jordan Henderson and James Milner in the summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, van Dijk said, "A really proud day for me, for my wife, for my kids, my family. It’s been a special feeling.

"I’m captain of Holland, that was already such a huge honour, a proud moment as well. But also to be the captain of Liverpool is something that I can’t describe at this point."

The defender has made over 200 appearances for the Reds’ having joined in 2018. He’s lifted the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup and Community Shield during his time at Anfield.
