The US Central Command (Centcom) announced that a US destroyer shot down several drones while providing support to commercial ships in the Red Sea that were targeted by attacks from Yemen.

"Today, there were 4 attacks on 3 commercial ships sailing separately in international waters south of the Red Sea," Centcom said in a statement.

It added that "the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Carney responded to distress calls from ships and provided assistance" and shot down three drones that were heading to the destroyer during the day.

The Pentagon announced that an American warship and several commercial ships were attacked in the Red Sea on Sunday.

Meanwhile, members of the United Nations Security Council have strongly condemned the recent Houthi attacks against a commercial vessel in the Red Sea.

They recalled ongoing threats and previous attacks against oil terminals under the Yemeni government's control. They demanded that all such attacks and actions cease immediately and called for the immediate release of the MV Galaxy Leader and its crew.

They also underlined the importance of the navigational rights and freedoms of all vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea, as per the International Law.

The Council also emphasised the importance of enhancing international and regional cooperation to counter threats to peace and security in the region.
