Dubai Municipality has launched an advanced laboratory designed to detect foodborne viruses using cutting-edge genomic technologies, marking a significant step forward in strengthening food safety and protecting public health.
The new ViruGenetics Lab, established at the Dubai Central Laboratory, is the first facility of its kind in the UAE.
It forms part of a wider initiative to introduce specialised, technology-driven testing centres aimed at enhancing the emirate’s food monitoring capabilities.
The lab is capable of processing nearly 60 samples per day, which can be scaled up to 100 samples in emergency situations, with rapid turnaround times designed to improve response efficiency and overall service quality.
It uses the latest advanced tools, including digital PCR technology, which allows for highly accurate early detection of key viral pathogens such as norovirus and hepatitis A and E.
This is particularly effective in analysing complex food products including dairy, seafood, juices and fresh produce, while maintaining high accuracy even in the presence of substances that can typically interfere with testing results.
