Dubai Police have recorded 13 fatalities in the first five months of this year due to jaywalking and unsafe e-scooter use.
Nine of the fatalities were caused by pedestrians crossing roads in unauthorized areas, while four were linked to improper use of electric scooters.
Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Acting Assistant Commandant for Operations, revealed that over 28,000 jaywalking violations were recorded, and more than 15,000 e-scooters were confiscated for breaching traffic laws.
Offences included riding in non-designated areas, operating scooters without helmets, and usage by individuals who were either unqualified or underage.
Al Mazrouei stressed that these practices pose serious risks, especially in densely populated areas, and highlighted the need for greater public awareness.
Dubai Police, in partnership with the Roads and Transport Authority, are ramping up educational campaigns, particularly targeting youth and visitors, to promote safer habits.
Al Mazrouei emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility and urged people to use pedestrian bridges and designated crossings, and to follow safety guidelines for scooter use.
To report reckless behaviour, the public can use the 'Police Eye' feature in the Dubai Police app or call the hotline 901.
Over the past five months, Dubai Police issued 28,027 fines for jaywalking and seized 15,029 scooters, in response to the urgent need to curb unsafe behaviours. Improper crossings and scooter misuse led to 13 fatalities.#RoadSafety pic.twitter.com/ntpAnoABCo
