More cycling tracks, pedestrian walkways and shaded rest areas are being constructed in Dubai’s residential neighbourhoods.
The move is part of the Roads and Transport Authority's (RTA) ‘soft-mobility’ plan, which also includes bike racks, plans for e-scooters and dedicated parking slots for rented cars.
It encourages people to use flexible means of transport for getting around the city.
Karama, Mankhool and Al Qusais 1 are the areas that will be covered in the first phase, which will be completed in March.
Officials say the initiative addresses the needs of the first and last-mile challenge by linking various modes of transit.
The project works will continue next year covering Barsha 1 and 2, Bateen, Baraha, Al Ras, Al Qusais 2 and Al Qusais Industrial area.
The number of locations covered by the plan is set to increase to 27 by 2024.
