UAE, Australia discuss trade, security and stability during official visit

UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy has concluded an official visit to Australia focused on strengthening economic ties, regional cooperation and security coordination between the two countries.

During the visit, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to its strategic partnership with the UAE and welcomed deeper bilateral cooperation.

Al Hashimy also met Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles, following his recent visit to the UAE and meeting with President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan earlier this month.

Discussions centred on trade, investment and wider cooperation, alongside regional developments and the impact of Iran’s recent missile attacks on regional stability, energy security and the global economy.

Al Hashimy stressed the need for what she described as a comprehensive resolution to the conflict, including concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme, missile and drone capabilities, proxy groups and maritime security.

She also thanked Australia for its support during the recent regional tensions and highlighted the strength of ties between the two countries, noting that more than 30,000 Australians live in the UAE.

The visit also focused heavily on trade and economic cooperation.

During talks with Australia’s Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell, Al Hashimy highlighted growth in bilateral trade following the signing of the UAE-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in 2024.

According to the UAE, trade between the two countries increased by more than 35 per cent between 2024 and 2025, rising from 4.2 billion dollars to 5.8 billion dollars.

Al Hashimy also held meetings with Australian ministers responsible for climate change, energy, international development and foreign affairs, with discussions covering humanitarian cooperation, water security, energy and regional peace efforts.

During the visit, she also spoke at Asia Society’s “The Bigger Picture” event series, where she discussed the UAE’s approach to economic partnership, international cooperation and regional stability.

The UAE delegation included Ambassador to Australia Dr Fahad Al Taffaq and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
