The UAE has welcomed a new resolution adopted by the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee during its 84th session.
The measure calls on Iran to immediately halt any attacks or threats against commercial vessels, ports and coastal infrastructure — warning such actions could trigger serious marine pollution from oil, chemicals or other hazardous materials.
The resolution also raises concern over the risk of large-scale environmental damage in a region known for its rich marine biodiversity, with potentially long-term impacts.
Member states are being urged to strengthen cooperation on pollution response and review emergency plans for the Arabian Sea, the Sea of Oman, and the Gulf region.
The IMO Secretary-General has also been invited to monitor the environmental impact of recent developments.
UAE officials say protecting these waters is critical to regional food, water and economic security, warning that any disruption could harm ecosystems and affect millions who rely on fishing and maritime trade.
They also reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to working with international partners to prevent escalation and safeguard the region’s marine environment.
