The United Nations has designated February 4, 2021 as the International Day of Human Fraternity following a proposal by the UAE.
Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, made the announcement.
The initiative was put forward in cooperation with Bahrain and Egypt.
Sheikh Nahyan said the proposal's acceptance is a victory against violence and extremism, in favour of the principles of human fraternity and peace.
The Minister described it as a new global success for the efforts of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Sheikh Nahyan said the resolution highlights the appreciation of the historic event that took place in Abu Dhabi on February 4, 2019, when the Human Fraternity Document was signed by Pope Francis, Head of the Roman Catholic Church, and Dr Ahmed Al Tayyeb, Grand Imam of Al Azhar, under the patronage Sheikh Mohamed.
He underscored that the move is a victory against violence, hate, religious and ethnic extremism and all forms of discrimination, in favour of the principles of human fraternity, tolerance, compassion and peace.
Sheikh Nahyan said his Ministry is drafting a comprehensive plan to celebrate the day February 4, affirming that the global recognition of the UAE’s efforts has created further responsibilities to promote the values of tolerance.
