The United Arab Emirates stressed the need to use innovation and knowledge to develop urban policies during its participation in the first meeting of the Executive Board of the United Nations (UN) Human Settlements Programme for 2026 in Nairobi.
Mohammed Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs, said that the UAE’s participation in these meetings comes as an extension of its active role in supporting international efforts to develop the urban work system and enhance policy integration in the areas of housing, which contributes to building more sustainable and resilient cities.
He added that the UAE continues to adopt global best practices and develop innovative urban models based on data and modern technologies, which enhances the quality of life and consolidates the country's position as a reliable partner in shaping the future of cities internationally.
The meeting discussed a number of strategic priority files, including the implementation of the strategic plan for the period 2026–2029, enhancing financial sustainability and the efficiency of resource allocation, in addition to reviewing the progress made in the areas of urban planning, housing and infrastructure, developing international partnerships with financial institutions and academic bodies, as well as discussing trends related to the World Urban Forum (WUF13).
The participation comes with the UAE’s keenness to enhance its active presence in shaping international urban work priorities, and to support the directions of the UN Human Settlements Programme towards developing more sustainable and inclusive development models, in line with the country’s vision of building smart future cities.
