The UAE has strongly condemned the Iranian attack that targeted two vessels affiliated with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) as they transited the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday evening.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) emphasised that "targeting commercial shipping and using the Strait as a tool of economic coercion or blackmail represents acts of piracy by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps".
It added that the attack constitutes a direct threat to the region's stability, global energy security, and its people.
The ministry also noted that the attack constitutes a flagrant violation of UN Security Council resolution 2817.
The resolution rejects the targeting of commercial vessels or the obstruction of international maritime routes, and affirms the importance of freedom of navigation.
The UAE further stressed the need for Iran to halt these unprovoked attacks, ensure its full commitment to an immediate cessation of all hostilities, and the complete and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
ADNOC confirmed the attack on its vessels, with no injuries reported, and the situation brought under control.
The attack was the second such incident involving ADNOC vessels in less than a week. On Saturday, the UAE condemned an Iranian attack on a vessel linked to the state oil company as it passed through the Strait.
ADNOC, Abu Dhabi's state oil company, is one of the world's largest energy producers and exports crude oil, natural gas and refined products worldwide.
