Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, has announced that clean energy now constitutes 27.83% of the UAE’s total energy mix as of 2023, nearing the 32% target set for 2030.
Ahead of the World Utilities Congress 2024 in Abu Dhabi, Al Mazrouei highlighted that the UAE has doubled its renewable energy capacity from 2019 to 2022, with a 70% increase in 2023, reaching 6.1 gigawatts.
He emphasised the UAE's progress in global renewable energy rankings, noting a leap from sixth to second place in per capita energy consumption from renewable sources.
The country’s investment in clean energy projects exceeds AED 45 billion, with notable projects including the 1.8 GW Phase VI of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the second phase of Dubai’s waste-to-energy project, and major photovoltaic projects in Abu Dhabi.
Al Mazrouei also discussed the UAE's leadership in green hydrogen production and carbon management. ADNOC is expanding its carbon capture capacity to 10 million tonnes annually by 2030, aiming for climate neutrality by 2045. The UAE is recognized as a leader in hydrogen production competitiveness and market readiness.
The Minister also outlined new policies to enhance energy efficiency in the industrial sector, aiming for a 33% reduction in energy demand and a 32% improvement in air quality by 2050.
The recent Cabinet-approved policy aims to regulate the energy services market, promoting private sector investment in energy efficiency and conservation projects.
The World Utilities Congress 2024 will showcase advancements in sustainability and water security, reinforcing the UAE’s role in the future of global energy and water management.
