New Zealand made history by defeating South Africa in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 final, securing their first title in this prestigious tournament.

The match, held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, showcased a remarkable performance from Melie Kerr, who scored 43 runs and took 3 wickets for 23 runs, leading her team to a 32-run victory.

Batting first after losing the toss, New Zealand set a competitive target of 159 runs. Veteran opener Suzie Bates contributed significantly with 32 runs, becoming the most capped player in Women’s Internationals.

Despite losing wickets throughout their innings, Kerr anchored the batting alongside the explosive Brooke Halliday, who added 38 runs. A late surge from Maddy Green, scoring 12 runs off just 6 balls, pushed the total to 158/5.

In their chase, South Africa started strong with captain Laura Wolvaardt leading the way, reaching 47 runs without loss in the powerplay. However, a dramatic shift occurred when Kerr claimed two crucial wickets.

Rosemary Mair emerged as a key player for New Zealand, taking 3 wickets for 25 runs, while South Africa ended their innings at 126/9, falling short of the target.

This win not only marks a significant milestone for New Zealand cricket but also emphasises the team's growing strength and resilience on the international stage.
