They lost 1-0 at Newcastle as Isaac Hayden scored in the final seconds of injury time.

Defending champions Manchester City were held 2-2 by Crystal Palace, while Arsenal conceded an 83rd-minute equaliser to draw 1-1 in their home game with Sheffield United.

Elsewhere, Wolves came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Southampton, Bournemouth suffered a 1-0 defeat to bottom side Norwich and Tottenham were held to a goalless draw at Watford.

In other games, West Ham and Everton played out a 1-1 draw, while it was the same score between Brighton and Aston Villa.
