USA, Brazil back private-sector developments in Amazon

MANDEL NGAN / AFP

Brazil and the USA have agreed to work together and promote development in the Amazon.

The decision was made in a meeting between diplomats of the two countries on Friday.

The private-sector developments have been supplemented by a biodiversity conservation fund for the Amazon.

Brazil's foreign minister Ernesto Araujo claimed that opening the rainforest to economic development is the only way to protect it.
