The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court has sentenced a teacher to two years in prison for assaulting four students.
The teacher will be deported from the UAE after serving the sentence and has been ordered to pay court fees, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department said on Tuesday.
According to Al Bayan, the assault took place in a classroom at a private school in Abu Dhabi. The students’ injuries left them unable to carry out their daily activities for up to 20 days.
The newspaper reported that the teacher confessed to the assault during the investigation and in court. He said he did it to stop the students causing a disturbance in class and to discipline them.
Al Bayan said CCTV footage backed up his confession, and the court found it showed extreme violence towards the students with no justification.
In its ruling, the court said an assault inside a school during class time was a breach of public order, as it put people’s safety and security at risk, according to the report.
The court stressed the need to firmly enforce the law to protect members of the community and deter such offences, Al Bayan added.
