A group of people have been arrested in Dubai for posting false, negative reviews on a company’s Google Maps page in an attempt to damage its reputation and cause financial losses.
Dubai Police launched an investigation following a complaint from the company's management.
It found that a number of businesses had formed groups and coordinated the fake reviews.
Major Yasser Juma Mohammed, Head of the Social Media Crimes Section at Dubai Police, revealed details of the case during the latest episode of the Dubai Police Podcast on Monday.
He said there are limits to freedom of expression, and that comments must not be used to harm people or their interests.
He also warned that spreading or re-sharing rumours online can lead to legal action, and urged social media users to get their news from official sources.

Filming someone without their permission can also lead to legal action if that person files a criminal complaint, he said.
“Regarding filming during crises and emergencies, the person must follow the instructions issued by official authorities and refrain from publishing private photos and videos that could lead to spreading rumours and destabilising community security,” he added.
