Abu Dhabi Police will start using a new Artificial Intelligence-based system to detect seatbelt and cell phone violations by drivers next year.
The project was announced at the GITEX Technology Week in the Dubai World Trade Centre.
In partnership with Abu Dhabi Digital, the Vehicular Attention and Safety Tracker (VAST) system will enable cameras to detect violations.
It will come into effect on January 1, 2021.
The system will help to increase security levels in the Emirate, enhance the safety of road users and raise awareness about the importance of following responsible driving practices.
According to the traffic laws, using mobile phones will driving carries a penalty of AED 800, while motorists who don't buckle up face AED 400 in fines.
