Abu Dhabi private schools assessed on promoting national identity

Eighty-seven private schools in Abu Dhabi have been assessed for their efforts to integrate UAE values and culture into their studies and activities for Emirati students.

The evaluation was part of the first phase of the National Identity Mark inspection programme launched by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK).

Eight schools were rated Outstanding for demonstrating exceptional understanding and implementation of the UAE's traditions, customs and values across their programmes and student activities.

Twenty-one schools were ranked Good, while 35 received Acceptable, and 23 received Weak evaluations.

Following the launch of the inspection framework in May 2023, ADEK dedicated a team of Emirati inspectors to evaluate 87 private schools with the highest number of Emirati pupils.

The National Identity Mark covers three domains: ‘Culture’ including history, heritage and Arabic language; ‘Values’ including respect, compassion and global understanding; and ‘Citizenship’ including belonging, volunteering and conservation.

ADEK’s inspection team will revisit the 87 already assessed private schools during the next academic year (2023/24) to ensure their continued adherence to the framework.

The second cycle of inspection visits will commence next academic year (2023/24) to inspect private schools with Emirati population among its students.

Following every inspection cycle, schools will receive comprehensive reports outlining improvement recommendations to enhance students' experiences and sense of belonging and pride.

While prioritising schools with the highest number of Emirati students during future inspections, ADEK encourages private schools without national enrolment to opt for evaluations of relevant activities designed to engage expatriate students with the country's heritage and deep-rooted traditions.

Schools rated Outstanding: The British International School in Abu Dhabi; Sheikh Zayed Academy for Girls; Sheikh Zayed Academy for Boys; Emirates National Schools, MBZ City; Al Ittihad National Private School, Khalifa City; Al Ittihad National Private School, Shakhbout City; Emirates National Schools, Branch 3; and ADNOC Schools, Sas Al Nakhl.
