Abu Dhabi has launched a licensing process for NGOs so that they operate within the UAE's legal framework.
The licences are being issued by the Department of Community Development (DCD) as per the conditions laid out in the federal law.
NGOs and non-profit associations will be required to maintain records of the minutes of their meetings and submit monthly reports and statements.
It's to ensure they work in close coordination with federal entities and local departments.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Community Development and DCD in May 2021 regarding non-government organisations that are governed by Federal Decree Law No. (35) of 2020, amending some provisions of Federal Law No. (2) of 2008 related to private associations and institutions of public benefit.
It defines the authorities of both parties in terms of supervision and regulation of the sector through a range of effective mechanisms, legislative policies and exchange of information and cooperation.
The licence enables NGOs to operate and provide services within an organised legal framework, enhancing social contribution through partnerships and cooperation, and supporting the growth of social initiatives that enhance quality of life.
