Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has begun a pilot project using drones to clean traffic signals across the city.
The system removes the need for manlifts and heavy equipment, improving safety for workers while cutting costs.
It also supports sustainability goals by reducing fuel and water use, as well as emissions linked to traditional cleaning methods.
Early trials at the Marrakech-Rebat Street junction showed promising results, with cleaning times cut by up to 50 per cent.
Initial findings also point to cost reductions of up to 15 per cent, with the potential to reach 25 per cent as the technology advances.
"Preliminary results demonstrated a reduction in operational time ranging from 25% to 50%, with the drone completing the cleaning of a single side in just three to four minutes," said Abdulla Ali Lootah, Director of Roads and Facilities Maintenance at the RTA's Traffic & Roads Agency.
He added that the pilot operation will continue, with further assessments focused on refining the cleaning process, maintaining the highest safety standards, and ensuring there is no impact on traffic flow.
