Dubai is taking further measures to increase the sustainability levels of its infrastructure projects.
The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) recently replaced 14,400 traditional lighting units with eco-friendly LED lights across nearly 40 tunnels and crossings, spanning over 22 km.
This six-month-long project covered prominent locations, including Shindagha Tunnel, Airport Tunnel, Dubai Mall and Dubai World Trade Centre tunnels.
The new lighting units will save 60 per cent of energy and has 177 per cent longer lifespan than conventional ones.
"These lights have a lifespan of 50,000 hours, compared to 18,000 hours for conventional lighting units, which reduces the frequency of replacements and minimises maintenance and operational costs," said Maitha bin Adai, CEO of the RTA's Traffic and Roads Agency.
"Compared to traditional lamps there's a 20% reduction in energy loss and heat emissions, enhancing the efficiency of both the units’ lighting operational system and the tunnels’ energy supply network," she added.
The project entailed re-engineering the operating systems of tunnel lighting units and night road crossings, with sustainable, eco-friendly lights.
