The future strategy for the nuclear energy and radiological sectors in the UAE has been approved by the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).
FANR's 2023 to 2026 roadmap, given the green light by the Board of Management, focuses on overseeing safety and security at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, waste management, research and development, the regulatory framework, and strategic national and international cooperation, amongst others.
FANR's plans for a number of strategic initiatives and projects in 2023 were also approved, in full alignment with Federal Government guidance.
Members of the Board received an update on the latest progress being made at the Barakah Plant: Unit 1 is currently undergoing the regular nuclear refuelling and maintenance phase; while Unit 2 is commercially operating.
FANR is currently reviewing the Operating License Application for Unit 3 and is expected to issue it later this year after Nawah Energy Company (Nawah), the operator, meets all regulatory requirements in terms of safety, security and safeguards.
