The United Arab Emirates has reaffirmed its strong commitment to alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, leading a pivotal "High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan" in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 14, 2025.
At the conference, the UAE announced an additional $200 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan, bringing its total contribution to $600.4 million since the outbreak of the conflict.
This landmark event, organised by the UAE, Ethiopia, the African Union (AU), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), was attended by key global leaders, including Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of Ethiopia; Dr. William Samoei Ruto, President of Kenya; António Guterres, UN Secretary-General; and Moussa Faki Mahamat, AU Commission Chairperson.
H.H. Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of State, emphasised the importance of humanitarian access, stating that no entity should prevent lifesaving aid from reaching those in need.
"We urge the warring parties to implement a humanitarian ceasefire to allow for safe and unhindered aid, especially for the most vulnerable, including women, children, and the elderly," he said.
The conference aimed to mobilise both regional and global support to address Sudan’s devastating humanitarian crisis, while calling for a humanitarian ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan.
The UAE's call for a humanitarian pause received widespread backing, with multiple nations joining in the plea for an end to the ongoing conflict.
