The UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, has highlighted a significant development in the humanitarian response to the crisis in Gaza.
During her briefing to the UN Security Council on September 16, she described the evacuation of 252 patients and their family members to the UAE as a positive step but underscored that much more support is needed.
Kaag noted the severe strain on Gaza's health infrastructure, emphasising that over 14,000 patients require specialised treatment outside of the region. She called on member states to show solidarity by offering refuge to these patients and their families.
The current conflict has resulted in extensive casualties as more than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed, and over 93,000 injured.
The World Health Organisation reports that over 22,000 people have suffered life-altering injuries, including severe limb injuries that often lead to amputation. Kaag stressed the dire state of Gaza's medical facilities, which have been further damaged by the ongoing conflict.
In terms of vaccination efforts, Kaag highlighted a successful first round of a campaign led by WHO, UNRWA, and UNICEF, with a second phase scheduled to begin in about four weeks.
Kaag reaffirmed the international community's responsibility to protect and aid those affected, while advocating for a sustainable peace that ensures security for Israel and a viable, independent Palestinian state.
