Nadal eases in to next round, Federer scrapes through at Australian Open

Top seed Rafael Nadal cruised past Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets to reach the Australian Open fourth round.

The 19-time Grand Slam champion could face Australian Nick Kyrgios in the last 16.

Nick Kyrgios plays his third-round match against Russian 16th seed Karen Khachanov later on Saturday at Melbourne Park.

Roger Federer survived a huge scare to beat unseeded Australian John Millman 10-8 in a final-set tie-break and reach the Australian Open fourth round.

The Swiss world number three won an epic game that lasted four hours three minutes.

He will face Hungary's Marton Fucsovics in the fourth round.

The win keeps alive Federer's hopes of extending his record total of 20 major titles - with Rafael Nadal chasing on 19 and Novak Djokovic close behind both of them on 16.

Gael Monfils reached the Australian Open fourth round by beating Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis in straight sets.

Monfils will play fifth seed Dominic Thiem or Taylor Fritz in the last 16.

Second seed Karolina Pliskova has been knocked out of the Australian Open in a third-round loss to Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Pavlyuchenkova will next play 2016 champion Angelique Kerber, who was made to fight by Camila Giorgi but managed to win 6-2 6-7 (4-7) 6-3.

Swiss sixth seed Belinda Bencic suffered a whitewash by Estonia's Anett Kontaveit, losing in straight sets in just 49 minutes. 

Kontaveit will now play 18-year-old Pole Iga Swiatek who defeated 19th seed Donna Vekic of Croatia.

Wimbledon champion Simona Halep produced an impressive display in her 6-1 6-4 win over Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva.

She now faces either 16th seed Elise Mertens or American Catherine Bellis.
