Premier League: United beat City in Manchester derby

Manchester United

Manchester United claimed the bragging rights over local rivals Manchester City, with a 1-0 win at the Etihad Stadium. Marcus Rashford became the youngest-ever scorer in the top-flight history of the derby, netting the game’s only goal in the 16th minute. The 18-year-old beat City centre-back Martin Demichelis, before sliding a finish past ’keeper Joe Hart. The win moves Louis van Gaal’s team to within a point of their rivals, who currently occupy the fourth and final Champions League spot. Meanwhile, Tottenham kept the pressure up on league leaders Leicester with a 3-0 win over Bournemouth. Harry Kane hit a double and Christian Eriksen added a third as Spurs moved back to within five points of the top. Elsewhere, Liverpool let a two-goal lead slip to lose 3-2 at Southampton. Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge had seemed to put the Reds on course for the win, but Sadio Mane (2) and Graziano Pelle struck late on to secure a remarkable turnaround for the Saints. In the Tyne-Wear derby, Newcastle ended a run of six-straight losses against their fierce rivals, Sunderland. Aleksandar Mitrovic’s 83rd minute header secured a 1-1 draw, after Jermain Defoe’s opener. The result leaves both sides in the relegation zone, with Sunderland two points behind 17th-placed Norwich, and Newcastle one point further adrift.
