Rafael Nadal advances at Barcelona Open

Rafael Nadal has advanced to the third round of the Barcelona Open, beating Leonard Mayer 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.

The top seed will next face fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, who defeated 15th-seeded Lucas Pouille 6-3, 6-1.

Meanwhile, Monte Carlo Masters champion Fabio Fognini has withdrawn from the tournament because of a hamstring injury.

Elsewhere, seventh-seeded Daniil Medvedev overcame Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, while American Mackenzie McDonald advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over 11th-seeded Gilles Simon.

There were also wins for Grigor Dimitrov, Benoit Paire, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Roberto Carballes Baena.
