At least seven people have been killed and scores more feared trapped after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Albania early Tuesday.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was centred 10 km northwest of Shijak, at a shallow depth of 10 km.

Video footage shared on social media showed buildings in Durres with large cracks, including one apartment with most of a bedroom wall missing.

It's the strongest earthquake to hit Albania in decades.

Firefighters and army staff have launched search operations with several neighbourhoods left without power.
