'Geminid' meteor shower to light up UAE skies

Stargazers are in for a treat as the 'Geminid' meteor shower will light up the UAE skies next week.

It is expected to peak on the night of December 13 with more than a meteor a minute.

The visibility conditions look perfect as there will be no moonlight interference this year.

The shower owes its name to the constellation Gemini because the meteors seem to emerge from this constellation in the sky.

Meteors should be visible across the entire sky, though from Dubai, the radiant of the shower will appear 58 degrees above the north-eastern horizon at midnight.

Keeping this in mind, the Dubai Astronomy Group is organising a 'Geminids Meteor Shower Event' on December 13.
