His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, has attended the inauguration of Hewi Nad Al Sheba, the first community space launched under the 'Hewi Dubai' initiative.
The word 'Hewi' refers to a traditional outdoor space where families and neighbours naturally gather — reflecting the spirit of belonging and connection found in the Emirati fareej, or neighbourhood.
Developed by Dubai Municipality in partnership with Dubai Future Foundation and Ferjan Dubai, the initiative aims to create modern community spaces that strengthen social bonds, encourage outdoor activity, support local families and businesses, and bring residents of all ages together.
Sheikh Hamdan said the initiative is designed to preserve the legacy of traditional Emirati neighbourhoods that helped shape values and social cohesion, while connecting the past with the present and future so younger generations can experience the same sense of togetherness.
He added that enhancing quality of life remains a top priority, with the project providing welcoming spaces for senior citizens, along with safe recreational areas that support children’s social and cultural development.
Hewi Nad Al Sheba features a contemporary, open design aimed at encouraging movement, interaction and community engagement across all age groups.
The space uses native plants such as sidr and tamarisk trees, along with sustainable, locally sourced materials, including limestone and rammed earth.
The site includes several dedicated areas, such as Al Decha, a quiet gathering space near the mosque, Al Saaha, a flexible area for meetings and community events, and Al Yalsa, a seating area overlooking the children’s play zone.
A walking path also runs through the site, encouraging residents to reconnect with nature.
