Sharjah student wins third place at ISEF

Saif Hassan Ibrahim Karam from Sharjah Model Secondary School won third place in chemistry worldwide at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, USA.

The 11th-grader won third place out of over 2,000 participating students from 70 countries.

Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology, took to her official X account to congratulate the youngster.

She said, "I congratulate the student Saif Hassan Ibrahim Karam from Sharjah Model Secondary School for his "win" in the International Science and Engineering Fair ISEF. Saif is a public school student who won third place out of more than 2,000 participating students from 70 countries. 

"We are proud of our son Saif and his global achievement, and look forward to his return to the beloved land of the Emirates," she added.

The International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is one of the most prominent global platforms for displaying scientific and technological research by talented students worldwide.

Emirati student Saif Hassan Ibrahim, who is in the eleventh grade at the Sharjah Model Secondary School, won the title of "Young Emirati Scientist" for the seventh session of the National Festival of Science, Technology and Innovation, which the Ministry of Education organised to coincide with the month of innovation last February.

His project involved developing a chemical compound that absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and converts it into clean fuel under the supervision of chemistry teacher Ayat Tawfiq.

He conducted many experiments in the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah laboratories and developed a new compound that absorbs carbon dioxide. 

He explained that this chemical reaction produces hydrogen, which is considered the fuel of the future. Thanks to this discovery, the student can contribute to reducing carbon emissions and providing a clean and sustainable energy source. In addition, the student is currently working on developing a drone that runs on clean fuel to reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere.

The innovation of Emirati student Saif Hassan Ibrahim in the field of converting carbon dioxide into clean fuel is considered an achievement that reflects the UAE's commitment to innovation and sustainability in the face of global environmental challenges, as developing a chemical compound that helps reduce carbon emissions from the atmosphere is considered a matter of utmost importance at present. 

Furthermore, with increasing awareness of climate change and its negative impact on the planet, efforts to reduce carbon emissions have become essential to maintain environmental health and limit global warming.
