Authorities in Dubai have started mapping key roads in the city as they begin preparations for the launch of self-driving taxis.
The first stage will see five Chevy Bolt-based autonomous collect data around traffic signals, signage and driver behaviour in the Jumeriah 1 area.
It will ensure AI and autonomous driving systems safely adapt to Dubai traffic conditions.
“The aim is to obtain the best readings and data through onboard lidars, radars and cameras that capture data and images within a 360-degree field of vision,” said Ahmed Hashem Bahrozyan, CEO of Public Transport Agency at Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
By 2030, 4,000 driverless taxis will take to the Dubai roads as part of the joint efforts by the RTA and self-driving tech firm Cruise. It will help alleviate traffic congestion, lower the number of traffic accidents, and cut harmful emissions.
