Dubai Police has announced that it has designated seven areas in the emirate for the firing of Eid al-Fitr cannons.
The cannons will be fired to mark the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan, announce the sighting of the crescent moon and the start of Eid Al Fitr.
Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations Affairs explained that the Eid cannon was a means by which fasting people could find out when to break the fast or the announcement of Eid, before the invention of clocks, and Dubai is keen to continue the custom.
The Eid cannons are at seven locations across Dubai – Zabeel next to Grand Zabeel Mosque, and at prayer sites in Nad Al Shiba, Nadd Al Hamar, Baraha, Al Barsha, Umm Suqeim and Hatta.
