Infant with appendicitis saved

A five-month-old baby with a rare case of acute appendicitis has been successfully operated on in Dubai.

Aydin Zefri was admitted to Zulekha hospital and diagnosed with the condition which was complicated with peritonitis.

Whilst appendicitis is normally treated by removing the appendix, in this case Aydin also had peritonitis which can rapidly spread into the blood and other organs, resulting in multiple organ failure and even death.

It is very difficult to diagnose infants with acute appendicitis and the morbidity and mortality rate is usually very high in this age group because of the complications.
