Daily bread and meals will be provided to 20,000 people affected by the war in Gaza through a bakery initiative launched by Sharjah Charity International.
Implemented in collaboration with Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, the project aims to support children, the elderly and displaced families amid worsening food insecurity and the risk of famine in the region. The initiative comes at a monthly cost of AED750,000.
According to Abdullah Sultan bin Khadem, Executive Director of Sharjah Charity International, the organisation has previously drilled 12 wells and operated field kitchens to help meet humanitarian needs in Gaza.
It comes as Israel, under international pressure, lifted 11-week aid blockade to allow 100 aid trucks carrying flour, baby food and medical supplies into Gaza on Wednesday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the government would consider a temporary ceasefire to facilitate the return of hostages but affirmed plans to continue the military campaign in Gaza.
Despite the limited entry of aid - 98 trucks on Monday and Tuesday - many supplies have yet to reach local bakeries, markets and hospitals.
Aid officials report that Gaza’s soup kitchens and food distribution networks remain critically undersupplied.
