The United Arab Emirates has taken another step in solidifying its role as a key player in global health with the signing of two major agreements with the World Health Organisation.
The agreements, signed in Abu Dhabi, reinforce the strategic partnership between the UAE and WHO, focusing on enhancing global health logistics and supporting humanitarian efforts in conflict zones.
One of the key elements of the agreement is the continued expansion of the WHO Hub for Global Health Emergencies Logistics in Dubai. This hub, which has grown significantly, serves as a vital logistical center for WHO's emergency response operations worldwide.
In recent years, the value of health supplies transiting through the hub has increased by 400%, reflecting the growing demand for swift and effective response to health emergencies around the globe.
Dr. Michael Ryan, Deputy Director-General of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme, highlighted the importance of the UAE's support in strengthening WHO's operational capacity, especially in light of the increasing number of health crises worldwide. The UAE's strategic location, robust infrastructure, and commitment to global health make it an ideal partner for WHO's logistics operations.
In addition to its logistical contributions, the UAE has committed $3 million in funding to support WHO’s ongoing humanitarian efforts in Chad.
This funding will specifically assist Sudanese refugees who have been displaced by ongoing conflicts in the region. The WHO plans to use the funds to improve access to maternal and child health services, including vaccinations, nutrition programs, and the strengthening of local health systems in the affected areas.
Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, emphasised the country's commitment to addressing global health challenges and supporting vulnerable communities. "This agreement reflects the UAE’s ongoing dedication to addressing humanitarian needs and ensuring the continued delivery of life-saving assistance in conflict zones and crisis regions," she said.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO's Director-General posted a message on social media, hailing the hub in Dubai as the backbone of their logistics support to emergency responses.

“The UAE is not only a partner in logistics but also a critical partner in our humanitarian response efforts around the world,” Dr. Tedros said, emphasising the importance of such partnerships in tackling global health emergencies.
As the world faces growing health challenges, the UAE’s collaboration with WHO reflects a strong commitment to improving global health outcomes, particularly in vulnerable regions impacted by conflict and humanitarian crises.
